Ingredient Notes

Here are a few details about the ingredients I use and why.

Ingredients to make a cucumber lime mocktail: sparkling water, lime juice, fresh mint, agave syrup, and cucumber. Ingredients are sitting on a round wooden tray.
  • Persian cucumber– these are the smaller cucumbers. At my store they come in a bag with 5-6 cucumbers.
  • Fresh mint leaves– makes the drink so refreshing.
  • agave syrupyou can use simple syrup (homemade or store bought) or honey as a substitute. I like agave because it has a lower glycemic index, so it doesn’t spike blood sugar like sugar does.
  • lime juicefresh is best! Use a citrus press for easy juicing. Depending on how juicy your limes are, you’ll need anywhere from 1 to 3 to yield an ounce of juice.
  • sparkling water I used Topo Chico for this recipe, pick your favorite brand. I also have a soda stream, and often just make my own sparkling water.
  • Ice– regular cubes for the shaker are best, because they don’t melt as fast so they won’t dilute the drink. In the drink itself, you can use regular, or crushed or whatever you prefer.

  3. Add the lime juice to the shaker along with a large handful of ice. Shake vigorously for 20-30 seconds until the shaker feels chilled and frosty.

Tips & Tricks

  • Make sure to muddle the cucumber really well until it is mostly broken down. This will extract the most juice and will give the mocktail a balanced, refreshing flavor.
  • No Persian cucumber? No problem! Swap it for a 5-inch piece of English cucumber. The English cucumbers have less seeds which is why it’s a good substitute. If you only have a standard cucumber, you can use it. Slice it in half and scoop out the seeds, then chop and proceed with the recipe.
  • Want it sweeter? Use ¾ ounce agave syrup instead of ½ ounce.
  • Juicing Tip: Roll your limes on the counter before juicing to get the most juice out!
  • To create the ribbon of cucumber, use a vegetable peeler to remove two thin slices of cucumber. Accordion fold each slice then skewer onto a cocktail pick.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Persian cucumber?

Persian cucumbers, often sold as “mini cucumbers”, are about 5-inches long with thin skin and fewer seeds than standard cucumbers. They have a mild, sweet flavor similar to an English cucumber. If you don’t have access to Persian cucumbers, you can use a 5-inch piece of an English cucumber instead for similar results.

Can I make this drink without a cocktail shaker?

Absolutely. You can use a pint or quart-sized mason jar with a tight-fitting lid to shake the mocktail. Use a small sieve or tea strainer to strain the mocktail into the glass.

What can I use in place of a muddler?

You can use a wooden spoon if you do not have a traditional cocktail muddler.

Why Mocktails Are The Best!
